D40X shortcomings

I’ve recently been looking at getting a new lens for my Nikon D40X. The problem with the D40X is that it doesn’t contain a motor for auto-focus in the body (like the D80 does). To get around this you have to buy the new range of Nikkor AF-S lenses, but these can often cost quite a lot.

For example I’ve been looking at getting a macro lens. The only AF-S macro lens available (unless I look at brands other than Nikon) is the Nikkor Micro AF-S 105mm VR lens which costs around £400-500!

I’ve also looked at AF lenses, such as the Nikkor Micro AF 60mm lens. But with these I won’t have auto-focus. Ok so when doing macro work I probably won’t need auto-focus. But for other types of lens, it means if I want auto focus, I typically have to look at the more expensive AF-S VR lenses than getting a cheaper AF lens second hand.

Despite this, I still think the D40X is an amazing camera. I’ll be taking it out with me to the London Marathon next weekend.
